All earthworks shall be carried out in fully drained conditions with no free water on the working surfaces. All preparatory excavation work and subsequent excavations in borrow areas or areas to be filled shall be kept drained at all times. Cut and fill areas shall be adequately sloped/graded so that they do not pond water or allow water to infiltrate.
Temporary drains shall be installed or pumping be carried out as necessary to remove or redirect water from the area of operation or to drain water as soon as it is seen to pond. If the Contractor considers it impracticable to maintain full draining of excavations or areas to be filled he/she shall propose measures to revise the drainage requirements for the Engineer’s approval.
Any fill or final excavation surface material/s that becomes too wet or soft shall be reworked and dried. Where this operation does not work then the material may need to be removed and replaced. All fill surfaces shall be graded and rolled at the end of each day's work to prevent any ponding and erosion. Prior to commencement of the following day’s filling operations, the previously graded and rolled surface shall be scarified by approved plant. If during scarifying any soft or weakened materials are observed then these shall be re-worked to bring them back to standard prior to fill being placed over them.
